0305 – Jan 31

Here we are, Thursday mailbag time. Let’s see just what we have to work with this week.

Nils De Groef, Antwerp

“Dale, may I point out that the Diamonds D did not allow all of those 46 points? The Tigers scored on more than 1 offensive turnover if I recall correctly… That does not, however, make it any less painful!”

Of course you can say that, and it’s a fair point. Did teams score against Antwerp during the regular season on turnovers or on special teams? I don’t recall. In any case, it was a huge difference from the regular season. And yes, losing sucks.

Carlos Pype, Wevelgem

“Are there any players you’re looking forward to see this season? Any players you are expecting big improvements from, or at least a step forward in their progression towards becoming good football players?”

That’s a great question. It’s made a bit more difficult by the fact that I haven’t seen team rosters for the upcoming season and it’s possible that one or more of these players don’t actually play football any more.. But based on last year, I’ll give you a few names to look out for this season that I think could take a big step forward.

LB Sebastian Morales-Rosales, Diamonds
2012 stats : 8 rush, 39 yards – 23 tak, 1 fr

One of those guys that seems to be all over the field, and now he’s got more experience he should find himself in the right place more often.

QB Kevin Noël, Black Angels
2012 stats : 13/31, 141 yds, 1 td, 2 int, 53.1 qbr

Got some time at QB last season and could be due for more this time around.

RB/KR Brian De Caluwe, Bulls
2012 stats : 30 rush, 157 yds, 2 td – 3 rec, 24 yds – 6 tak, 1 sack, 1 int – 8 kr, 24.8 ave – 6 pr, 12.7 ave

Unfortunate not to make the All-FFL team, just look at his stats, he can do pretty much anything, and does it at tremendous speed.

DB Eckhart Piqueur, Gators
2012 stats : 4.5 tak, 1 int

He has tanked up* a lot and can get a job done on the defensive side of the ball.

QB Wout Huysman, IZE
2012 stats : none

Many years ago, I coached Wout when he was a junior. I’m very curious to see how he’ll handle the senior competition, but I am sure of this – he’s got an arm like a cannon.

LB Jarne Schmitt, LEU
2012 stats : 24.5 tak, 2 sack

Finished just outside the top ten in the league for tackles last year and the Lions need better play from their front seven.

WR Philippe Raman, PUU
2012 stats : 3 rec, 57 yds, 1 td

I’m pretty much basing this pick on the fact that he made the play of the year last season. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFbsFpJ_vPY – play starts at around 06:15) If he can catch that ball, he can catch any ball.

Cederic Veryser, Ardooie

“(The game reports) look like a huge job, do you actually have any time to enjoy the game? Or are you like asian people on a city trip who take pictures at a rate of 1000 an hour and then have to enjoy their trip back home?”

It’s not so bad, some things I can write down pre-snap and all the rest I write down after the play is finished. The Game Reports themselves only get made after I get home, they aren’t updated live. So yes, I do enjoy the games.

Outro

So that’s about it for now, hopefully on Monday we might have something a bit different for you, but that depends on some things outside of my control. In any case, we’ll have both my playoff predictions and your predictions as well. Until then

* ‘tanked up’ is an Aussie phrase meaning ‘to put on a lot of muscle’

  1. Since I can’t find your mailadress, a question from me: Is someone uploading BFL games to YouTube like last year? And if so, who?

    Thanks, really enjoying your blog.
