0407 – Barbarian FAQ

Hello and welcome back to the Barbarian Blog. We’ve been receiving quite a few questions lately, so I thought I’d try to answer them all in the one place – here.

What is the history of the Barbarians?

Well, the idea was kind of brought up a couple of times, first before the 2013 season to make an All-Star team based off the All-FFL team, and then again during that season when Benedict Vermaut and the organisers of the Treasure Cup were looking for opponents. Initially the suggestion was for three All-Star teams (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels), but it ended up just being one team made up mostly of players from the FAFL.

We had a good time at the Treasure Cup, winning a couple of games, but the most important thing was how positive everybody was about the experience, and how everybody wanted to go further with it.

What the hell sort of name is ‘Barbarians’ anyway?

The long version is this : Last year’s Barbarians were made up of players who were selected from all the teams in the FAFL, plus a few guys from the LFFAB. We weren’t an official national team, just a collection of players and coaches who came together to play at the Treasure Cup. Which is exactly what happens with the Rugby team called ‘Barbarian FC’. For rugby players it’s a great honor to play for Barbarian FC, so it was an appropriate name choice.
The short version is this : The name was my idea and I’m still yet to hear a better one (by the way, there’s no need to try and give a better suggestion, the name is what it is and it won’t be changed now).

Are The Barbarians the national team?

Yes and no (but mostly yes). After our successful debut at the Treasure Cup, we were asked by outgoing BFL President Lesley Moreels to continue on as the National Team. However it hasn’t been officially announced at a BFL meeting, so technically it’s not actually official yet. But it will be.

Who are the coaches?

Head Coach – Roald Piqueur

Offensive coördinator – Pauwel Depreitere
Defensive coördinator – Stefaan Degrendele
Special teams coördinator – Dale Housden

Offensive assistants – John Jolie, Floris Van Hoof, Frederik George
Defensive assistants – Aarnout Ecker, John Miceli, Christoph Olenaed

There are also a number of people working behind the scenes who aren’t directly involved in the coaching as well, so we have a large group of participants.

How will the team be selected?

The team will be selected based on the form of the players during the upcoming season. There may well be some sort of combine or something similar as well, as there seems to be lots of support for such a thing. But it hasn’t been completely decided yet, it’s one of the things that we will need to talk about at our next meeting.

When and where are the trainings?

The locations are still to be confirmed. Puurs is always an option but ideally we’d like to do trainings in some other places as well, like somewhere around/in Brussels. Confirmation will come later.

When and where are the games?

Sat, July 19 @ Ostend vs the Dutch Lions
Sun, August 3 @ ?? vs ??

One game is confirmed and the other isn’t, so we’ll only be sure about this at a later date.

What jerseys will the Barbarians use?

Ideally we’ll have new Belgian Barbarians jerseys, but we’ll see how that works out (depends on sponsorship). There is already a back-up plan just in case it doesn’t get sorted in time.

What ever happened to the Griffins?

To be honest I have no idea. I guess people just didn’t have the time to organise it any more, because it’s a lot of work.

Can I play?

Maybe. Like I said, that team will be selected based on performance. There are probably around 500 senior players in Belgium and only around 45 players will make the team.

Can I help?

We’re pretty much set as far as senior coaches go. Ideally, at some point, we’d also like to involve juniors as well. If you feel like you want to get involved somehow in the Barbarian project, then contact me through facebook or whatever, and we’ll see what we can do. There’s still lots of work to be done!
